I had the great pleasure of experiencing my second DMB concert, sharing it with my two sons (my oldest son, a 19-year-old fan, and my youngest son, a 15-year-old non-fan), both guitar players, who left 100% converted.
In Tampa, Florida, the Ask Gary Amphitheater lived up to the previous reviews, with one exception - the acoustics. I was hopeful but didn't understand how an outdoor venue could receive high marks for acoustics. Dave talked very little to the audience, possibly due to the difficulty in understanding him when he did. I was in section 16 row T, although unsure if that matters.
Ticket prices were reasonable, and for the money, we were treated to one remarkable show! Despite the extreme heat and humidity, the band played for 3 hours straight with only a short break. I was impressed, especially since we were melting just watching. DMB kicked off with a charged 3-4 set of older songs before transitioning to some newer material. The songs were well-executed, and the band never appeared to be going through the motions.
It's incredible to think that every show is unique and enjoyable for them, but it certainly seemed like they relished playing the music and spending time together. In typical DMB fashion, the musical energy soared to a frenzied level, with freestyle jazz riffs conveying an incomprehensible language that resonated with everyone.
The audience was highly engaged, and the band reciprocated the energy. Watching my sons' faces light up with joy, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime memory that we shared.
